Get Ready to Quit

We're glad you're here. If you’ve been beating yourself up for not being able to quit in the past, give yourself a break. Most smokers try to quit smoking 6-9 times in their lifetime. We hope that understanding why it's been hard to quit will help you. And help you make a fresh start.

Before you move on to learning how to plan your quit, take a look at the list below. Consider using these tips to create your new quitting mind set:

  • Don't judge yourself. Not being able to quit in the past is not a character flaw! Nicotine is a powerful substance and it can take more than willpower alone to quit.
  • Get all the help you can. Quitting can be difficult. Getting both treatment and support may help. The U.S. Public Health Service Guidelines recommend a combination of treatment and support to help increase your chances of success.
  • Make an appointment with your doctor. Smoking is a treatable medical condition, and chances are your doctor has already helped many smokers quit. If you're thinking about quitting, talk to your doctor. Ask about treatment options and support.
  • Don't go it alone. Start building a support network to help you quit smoking. Tell your friends and family that you need their support.
  • Make a plan for quitting. The next section will show you how. The Plan-to-Quit Video will walk you through what you need to know. And the Plan-to-Quit Cards can help you personalize your own plan to jump-start your quit.

Remember, every smoker was a nonsmoker once. And you could be again.
